Blackley and Broughton Parliamentary Constituency

The constituency of Blackley and Broughton comprises 5 City of Manchester wards of Charlestown, Cheetham, Crumpsall, Harpurhey and
Higher Blackley together with the City of Salford wards of Broughton and Kersal. This is the only seat other than Cities of London and Westminster in Central London that covers two cities. The five Manchester wards, listed below, will have individual pages where highlighted:

  • Higher Blackley

This is an mainly urban seat, with many small parks and two large parks; Heaton Park is one of the largest municipal parks in Europe and Boggart Hole Clough is a large ancient woodland.

The constituency is currently held by the Labour Party, although the sitting MP has voted regularly with the Conservative Government on issues concerning Britain's proposed withdrawal from the European Union.

    Graham Stringer last night voted with Theresa May's government to prevent parliament from taking steps to prevent a no-deal Brexit by extending the article 50 negotiating period in order to agree an alternative deal with the EU. The former Manchester City Council Leaser joined with other veteran Eurosceptics Kate Hoey, and Dennis Skinner and 11 other Labour MP's in voting down Yvette Cooper's amendment by 321 votes to 298.

    Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Manchester Blackley, Iain Donaldson, has called on the Labour Party to stop vilifying veteran Labour MP Graham Stringer for his views on climate change and Britain's place in Europe, stating "That's my job!"

    Mr Stringer, contrary to what his views suggest, is Labour MP for Blackley and Broughton Constituency, which straddles the cities of Manchester and Salford.

    A robust poll conducted by the Guardian Newspaper shows that Manchester voters would reject Brexit in even greater numbers today than when the referendum took place in 2016.

    The poll shows that the remain vote:

    • In Manchester Withington support for remain has increased from 73.7% to 77.4%, the strongest in the North West.
    • In Manchester Central support for remain has increased from 63.3% to 68.4%;
    • in Manchester Gorton support for remain has increased from 62.1% to 68%;
    • In Wythenshawe and Sale East support for remain has increased from 50.1% to 58.1%; and, most significantly,
    • In Blackley and Broughton which narrowly voted leave at the referendum, support for remain has increased from 48.7% to 59% Remain.
