Cycle Routes in the City Centre - Great Ancoats Street

Manchester City Council have recently announced spending of £9.1million to 'upgrade' Great Ancoats Street but completely ignores the desires of residents, communters, and visitors who want safe cycling routes along and across this major road. It also ignores the promises Labour made in their 2018 manifesto to implement Chris Boardman's Made to Move report to prioritse integrated walking and cycling https://tfgm.com/made-to-move/publications

We welcome the proposals to improve crossings on Great Ancoats Street and additional street trees in a growing city that could do with more green spaces. But Great Ancoats Street currently contains some of the most dangerous stretches of on-road cycling and laughably poor shared-use footways. At the same time some 5,000 new residents are moving into the area, whilst Ancoats and the Northern Quarter continue to grow as a desireable location for jobs, investment, and entertainment.

Other comparable major cities would have a fully integrated cycle network across their city centres. Manchester does not. Instead the failings of Velocity, Cycling City Ambition, and various ad-hoc grants leaves us with a disparate and disappointingly dangerous patchwork that does not make cycling an easy choice to make.

Great Ancoats Street Plans

MCC say that the needs of "other road users" will be prioritised. Motorists are already prioritised across the city and millions of £s are being spent in our name on road improvments without providing safe infrastructure for the greenest, healthiest mode of travel.

We say this needs to change now! For a future-proof city, for safe cycling in the City Centre, all new developments must have segregated cycle routes integrated into the plans.

Great Ancoats Street must be changed to incorporate cycle lanes.
